NY residents are receiving exciting news in regard to the safety of their home. If you rent a home in New York, then your landlord may be required to have a radon test, and a mitigation system installed if needed. The American Lung Association is happy to announce that HUD, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, has made it mandatory that every multi-family home financed through HUD will be required to have a radon test. Additionally, any multi-family home financed through HUD that tests with high levels of gas will be required to have an air purification system installed to reduce the levels of the gas, and improve safety.
This motion stems from the larger group that HUD is a part of. The group consists of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy, and of course the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The group is called the Federal Healthy Homes Work Group, and its mission is to improve the safety and health of homes and its occupants.
If you have not heard of radon gas before, then all of this probably does not sound like that big of a deal. Radon gas is actually the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States next to smoking. Radon is responsible for the death of 21,000 people annually, and is both colorless and odorless. This means that although we cannot see nor smell this gas, it is taking the lives of loved ones every day. Additionally, because it is so under the radar, it can only be found through testing, which is why testing is so important.
The gas forms deep down below your New York home where no one is aware of it. Uranium which is found in soil naturally breaks down, and as part of the process forms radon gas. This gas then can find its way into the water supply of your NY home, or even enter through the foundation. Once it is in your home, it will only build in concentration unless you take the necessary action of calling a professional to install a mitigation system.
The American Lung Association is ecstatic about the number of lives that will be saved from this motion. 15% or so of all lung cancer cases are actually caused by radon gas, which means that if we removed radon gas from every home, there would be a 100% decline in the number of radon lung cancer cases. Air purification systems are also healthy for lung health not only for radon, but they provide increased ventilation, and reduce moisture for further increased lung health. S.W.A.T. Environmental of New York is pleased with the effort by HUD, and is hopeful that one day NY will be a place without radon lung cancer.
